Core connection

A workshop for qualified yoga teachers curious to enhance their understanding of core stability and better support their students with safe and effective Pilates & resistance training techniques

What is ‘core stability’? Is it as simple as “drawing the navel back to the spine”?

Do ‘sit ups’ give you a strong core?

There are a wealth of misconceptions around the subject of core stability, especially in the movement world with outdated cueing being all too common, and many mistaking a firmly held abdomen for a strong and functional core.

The core as a complex network of several interconnected, interactive parts; deep and superficial muscles working together as a whole to support functional movement.

So how can we improve our students’ theoretical and experiential understanding of core stability?

What strength practices can we integrate into our classes to support the longevity of our students’ asana practice, so it stays healing and doesn’t become harmful?

Do we need more strength and stability in our own bodies as yoga professionals?

This workshop is designed to introduce you to Yogalates and the role of core stability as the bedrock of this practice. We’ll dive into the anatomy of the core and explore specific Yogalates exercises that engage the deep abdominals, spine, hip muscles, glutes and shoulder girdle as a cohesive whole.

After the break, the second half of the workshop will include a 75 minute Yogalates class led by Beth, during which you’ll be able to get a feel for a full practice, playing with using resistance bands to enhance your core connection and build long, lean muscle and full body tone.

There will be time for questions and discussion afterwards.

What you’ll learn in this workshop:

  • Debunk common misconceptions around core stability

  • Dive into the anatomy of the core complex as a cohesive whole

  • Learn simple strength & stability core exercises to feed into your yoga sequencing

“My new Yogalates qualification has been a game changer for me. I have moved to bigger venues and all my classes are full. I am working smarter not harder; same income, less classes, meaning I have more time for the rest of my life.
Students particularly like the weights and band work :) Most of all it has given me the confidence to teach my way and be a little different.”
— Sue Pugh, founder of Vitabonayoga and regular contributor to OM magazine
